A woman who tested positive for Covid-19 was allegedly raped by an ambulance driver while being taken to hospital on Saturday night in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, police said.

Pathanamthitta District Police Superintendent KG Simon said the ambulance driver Noufal was detained and his arrest was recorded. The driver, who came from the Alappuzha district, was part of the “108 ambulance service” of the state health department. Police said he is also charged in a 2019 attempted murder case.

The SP said Noufal took the ambulance to deserted terrain on the way to the hospital and raped the woman. Upon arriving at the hospital, the woman recounted the incident to hospital staff who reported it to the police.

The police have registered the victim’s statement. She received special counseling at the covid hospital where she is being treated.
