A woman allegedly confined to a toilet for over a year by her husband was rescued from Rishpur village in Haryana’s Panipat district. The husband, meanwhile, claimed that the wife was mentally unstable.
The Protection of Women and Prohibition of Child Marriage officer Rajni Gupta, who led the rescue operation, said the woman did not appear mentally unstable and her physical condition indicates that she has been starving. “I received information that a woman was locked in the bathroom for more than a year. I come here with my team. When we got here, we found out that it was true. It seems that the woman has not eaten anything in many days, ”Gupta said, the ANI news agency reported.
A case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing.
The woman’s husband, however, claimed that there was no improvement in her mental condition despite taking her to the doctor.
“I was mentally unstable. We ask that you sit outside, but don’t sit there. We have taken her to the doctors, but her condition has not improved, “he said.
Gupta added that they had spoken with the woman and that the police will take additional action. “It is said that he is mentally unstable, but it is not true. We have spoken with her and it was evident that she is not mentally unstable. We can’t confirm if she’s mentally unstable or not, but she was locked in the bathroom. We rescued her and washed her hair. We have filed a police report. The police will act accordingly, ”he added.
Meanwhile, police said they will approach doctors to find out the woman’s mental state. “Rajni Gupta went to the village and rescued the woman who was locked up by her husband Naresh for over a year. We have registered a complaint and will take action after the investigation. Women are said to be mentally unstable. We will follow the doctor’s advice and move on, ”said a police officer.
