A 40-year-old woman in Bhubaneswar was allegedly beaten with an iron bar and then suffocated to death with a polythene bag by her two minor children on Wednesday night. The police said that the children, who had been arrested, were being tortured by her.
The woman, police said, who stayed with her two children in an apartment in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar returned home drunk, prompting a shouting match between them.
“The two sons gagged her with polyethylene and beat her with an iron bar, causing profuse bleeding and the subsequent death of the woman. The two boys then shot out of the house and fled. They were arrested on Thursday morning, ”said Bhubaneswar Police Deputy Commissioner Dr. Umashankar Dash.
After the murder, the children stored the body in the bathroom and fled with their dog, police said. They later called the building’s security guard, police added, and reported that some outsiders had broken into his apartment and beat his mother to death.
After this, the guard along with some others went to ask and found the apartment locked from the outside. The police were later informed and the woman’s body was found inside the bathroom.
Police said the two boys admitted to their crime and were arrested. They would be sent to a correctional facility. Police officers said that the two children who stayed in the apartment with their mother for the past 3 months were being physically tortured by their mother. She used to come home drunk and beat them, police said.
The wife’s husband works in Rourkela. The family had recently moved to the apartment from the old town area of Bhubaneswar.
The body has been sent for an autopsy.
