AGRA: Even as senior members of the faculty of Muslim University of Aligarh (AMU) on Thursday urged everyone to “rise above politics” to make the varsity team centennial celebrations a great success, many students have expressed strong reservations against the administration’s decision to take Prime Minister Narender Modi the main guest of the function on December 22.
In a signed statement, the varsity academics said: “Centennial celebrations must be held above differences. We need to work together in the interest of the university…. Our unit on the occasion will bring greater trust between the different university units and alumni associations, which are dedicated to organizing programs with famous people as guests ”.
On the other hand, several students opposed the invitation to the PM for the celebrations.
Ravish Ali Khan, a DSW senior, threatened to oppose the VC’s decision and read his ‘funeral oration’ (namaz-e-janaza) if he did not withdraw the invitation to the prime minister.
Mohammad Aarif Khan, another graduate student, said: “The prime minister is never in favor of our community. We can show you black flags if you don’t support the Muslim community or talk about the minority character of our college team. ”
Former AMU student union secretary Fahad Khan said the VC’s decision to invite the prime minister was personal and that the students are against it.
