India’s coronavirus disease (Covid-19) count on Thursday surpassed the eight million mark as the country recorded nearly 50,000 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing its count to 8,040,203, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.
However, the number of cases in the last 24 hours – 49,881 – marks a significant increase from the 36,470 cases reported two days ago, which was the lowest daily infection count the country had recorded since 34,884 on July 18. At the previous peak, meanwhile, there were 43,893 infections.

The number of recoveries increased by 56,480 to reach 7,315,989 or 90.85% of all cases. Active cases were reduced by 7,116 and are in 603,687 or 7.64% of the number of cases. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 120,527 or 1.50% of the total count, with 517 killed in the last 24 hours.
The new surge in cases comes as the national capital of Delhi is experiencing a rapid rise in infections in recent days. On Wednesday, Delhi reported over 5,000 cases for the first time, with 5,673 infections raising the capital’s Covid-19 count to 370,014. This was the second day in a row that Delhi recorded its highest number of cases in a single day, after 4,853 on Tuesday.

The health ministry noted on Thursday that India’s average daily death count due to the coronavirus disease has been declining in the past six weeks. There were 615 deaths a day, on average, from Oct. 21 to 27 during the sixth week, the ministry said.
Also on Thursday, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) said it had analyzed a total of 106,563,440 samples so far for Covid-19, with 1,075,760 samples being analyzed on October 28.
