New Delhi:
Bhai Dooj, Bhaubeej, Bhai Tika, Bhai Phonta is a festival that is celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar or in the Shalivahan Shaka calendar month of Kartika. It is celebrated during the Diwali or Tihar festival and the Holi festival. The celebrations on this day are similar to the Raksha Bandhan festival. On this day, older brothers give gifts to their younger sisters.
On the day of the festival, the sisters treat their brothers to a sumptuous meal that often includes their favorite dishes / sweets.
The entire ceremony signifies the duty of a brother to protect his sister, as well as the blessings of a sister to his brother.
Continuing the ceremony in traditional style, the sisters perform arti for their brother and apply a red tika to the brother’s forehead. This tika ceremony on the occasion of Bhai dooj signifies the sister’s sincere prayers for the long and happy life of her brother and treats them with gifts. In return, older brothers bless their sisters and may treat them with gifts or cash as well.
