The head of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a rally in Kolkata in protest against the Hathras gang rape case.
“I am looking forward to going to Hathras and meeting the relatives of the victim; what has happened is reprehensible, “he said at his first rally since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
“For me, my caste is humanity,” Banerjee said, adding that he will support his Dalit ‘brothers and sisters’.
The 19-year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped and tortured by “higher” caste men in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh on 14 September. She died Tuesday at Safdarjang Hospital in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, congressional workers and left-wing parties broke police barricades near the Esplanade Metro Canal in the city while protesting gang rape.
The TMC has already started its campaign to raise the issue, targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Friday afternoon, TMC’s media cell in Bengal posted on social media videos of its four MPs involved in a fight with police officers about a kilometer from the village of the Hathras victim.
The police prevented the leaders from going to the victim’s village to meet his family.
The team was led by Derek O’Brien, a member of TMC Rajya Sabha, and included Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
