Will play a role in Tamil Nadu Assembly election, says MK Alagiri

Former Union Minister and ousted DMK leader MK Alagiri said on Tuesday that he will play a role in the 2021 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. However, he ruled out the possibility of joining the BJP, saying he will not respond to the rumors.

After giving his condolences to SR Gopi, a local DMK official, whose brother SR Marudu recently passed away, told reporters that he will soon talk to his followers and make a decision.

When asked about the possibility of floating his own party, Alagiri, the estranged older brother of DMK chairman MK Stalin, said: “Whatever it is, I will discuss it with my supporters and let you know.”

When asked if it was true that the DMK had planned to give his son Durai Dayanidhi a plum job, he answered in the negative. After a pause, he said that he will not remain silent as he did in the Lok Sabha elections and that he will be active in the work leading up to the elections for the Assembly.

Meanwhile, an intimate confidant of his told him The Hindu that Mr. Alagiri only wanted to join the DMK since the Lok Sabha elections ended, although he had received invitations from other parties. With the Assembly elections fast approaching, political parties and leaders have reached out to Alagiri, he said.

“As the son of the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi and as a leader who had been instrumental in the victory of the DMK in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu in the past elections, Mr. Alagiri still held the rank and file in the party, “He insisted. The position of organizing secretary of the southern zone was previously awarded by the DMK in recognition of his work, he added.

Another source close to Mr. Alagiri stated that if he was not readmitted to the DMK, he would float a party in the name of “Kalaignar DMK” and stand for the Assembly elections. There was no question that Alagiri was joining the BJP or others, including actor Rajnikanth, for now, the source added.
