Echoing his counterparts in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said on Thursday that the state government will introduce strong measures to curb religious conversions due to “love jihad.”
“There are many reports of conversions due to love of jihad. I don’t know about other states, but in Karnataka we are going to end this. We consider attracting girls with money or love to be serious. We will take tough measures, ”Yediyurappa said at the BJP state executive meeting in Mangaluru on Thursday.
Earlier, the BJP National Secretary General and State Minister CT Ravi called for the enactment of a strict law against “love jihad.” “Following the order of the Allahabad High Court, Karnataka will enact a law prohibiting religious conversions for the sake of marriage. We will not be silent when the jihadists strip the dignity of Our Sisters. Anyone involved in the act of conversion will face severe and swift punishment, ”he said on social media Tuesday.
Interior Minister Basavaraj Bommai said: “This issue of love jihad has been around for some time and is a social evil. The thought is that a law is necessary. “
The move comes amid speculation that Yediyurappa could be replaced as Chief Minister due to allegations of corruption and nepotism against him, and his advanced age.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and former CM Siddaramaiah stated in a post on social media on Wednesday, “According to information coming out of Delhi, the BJP will carry out a change of prime minister following the election results. I am very confident that Yediyurappa will be replaced. “
