Why no action is taken on Kunal Kamra’s tweets, Parliament panel asks Twitter to reply within 7 days

A joint committee of Parliament for Data Protection asked Twitter on Thursday why it has not taken any action against tweets by comedian Kunal Kamra about India’s Chief Justice, ANI reported. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi and Congressional MP Vivek Tankha questioned Twitter’s chief of policy.

In response to this questioning, Kamra tweeted: “Personal freedom is like promotions in corporate India …”

Twitter, meanwhile, said it cannot remove the post unless the court issues such orders, Meenakshi Lekhi said.

“We have asked for an answer in 7 days. Since there are no laws in India regarding these, we have to speak to the top executives of such service providers, ”said Meenakshi Lekhi.

On November 12, Attorney General KK Venugopal consented to the initiation of contempt proceedings against comic book artist Kunal Kamra for his tweets. “The tweets I extract below are not only in bad taste, but they clearly cross the line between humor and contempt. from the court, ”Venugopal said.

A day later, on November 13, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Friday requesting the initiation of criminal proceedings for contempt against Kamra.

The petition, filed by five petitioners, including law student Shrirang Katneshwarkar, has claimed that Kamra had started tweeting on November 11 as the high court was hearing journalist Arnab Goswami’s appeal against the Bombay High Court order that denied his plea on provisional bail in 2018 inciting the suicide case.

Kamra had refused to retract his tweets and apologize.

“The tweets I posted recently have been found in contempt of court. Everything I tweeted was from my point of view that the Supreme Court of India gave a partial decision in favor of a speaker in prime time, ”he said in a statement addressed to Venugopal and the judges on his Twitter page. “My point of view has not changed because the silence of the Supreme Court of India on issues of the personal freedom of others cannot be without criticism. I do not intend to retract my tweets or apologize for them. I think they speak for themselves, ”he added.
