The Kerala government imposed section 144 of the CrPC in Thiruvananthapuram that prohibits the gathering of more than five people, as the state on Friday reported its highest peak in a single day in Covid-19 cases.

According to district collector Navjot Khosa, the order will take effect from 9 a.m. on October 3 and will remain in effect until midnight on October 31. The order establishes that the meeting of more than five people in front of any bank, store or commercial establishment will be prohibited. He also ordered that people stay home unless they were for essential activities.

All public exams announced prior to October 2 will be held according to schedule. Strict compliance with the Covid-19 protocol will be guaranteed. For exams scheduled to take place during the restricted period, notices regarding exams will be issued after consultation with the district’s disaster management authority.

All banks will operate according to Covid protocols.

Containment zone restrictions

Any gathering (indoor and outdoor) of more than five people will be prohibited, except in the case of weddings and funerals where the meeting of up to 20 people will be allowed. Only essential activities and stores that sell food, medicine and food such as milk, vegetables, meat and fish will be allowed.

The movement of people in or out of the containment zones will not be allowed, except for medical emergencies and to maintain the supply of essential goods and services.

Restrictions outside containment zones

The congregation or public function of more than 5 people in outdoor spaces will be prohibited. All indoor gatherings such as social, cultural, political, academic, religious, inaugural functions, etc .; it will be limited to 20 participants, including religious prayers and funerals.

For married couples, a maximum of 50 people will be allowed to meet, as long as they follow strict rules of social distancing.

Public transportation, government institutions, commercial establishments, industries, and hospitals can fully function. However, social distancing and other covid protocols must be followed.

Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta had issued a nightly order on the imposition of section 144 in Kerala on Thursday, indicating that the meetings pose an imminent danger of an over-spread of the infection. “In light of the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, congregations and public gatherings pose an imminent danger of a super-spread of the infection,” the order said.

Kerala recorded 9,258 positive cases and 4,092 recoveries on Friday, the highest peak and recoveries in a single day, respectively. The infection count reached 2,12,499, while the death toll rose to 791 with 20 new deaths.
