West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a national economic package worth Rs 10 lakh crore to combat the coronavirus crisis.
He made the appeal while expressing support for the extension of the 21-day blockade during the prime minister’s meeting via video conference with the chief ministers of all states during the day.
After the meeting, Banerjee told reporters that the central government has announced a package of Rs 1.7 lakh crore that is not even one percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP).
“Look at the United States, it is spending 10% of its GDP, while the United Kingdom is using 15% and Japan 20%. I have asked the prime minister for a “national economic package” of Rs 10 lakh crore, so that we can reach the six percent mark. We have already asked for a special package worth Rs 25 billion to deal with the crisis, but we are waiting for any response. “
Banerjee said he agreed with the prime minister to extend the blockade until April 30 while talking about how the next two to three weeks are “crucial and critical” to fighting the pandemic.
“The Prime Minister may have said this with some genuine reasons. I know that people are suffering due to the blockage. I would like to request that everyone be patient with us ”, said the CM.
Regarding the Center’s directive to closely monitor some locations in Bengal, Banerjee said that no one should play the community card on the coronavirus, adding that “this is not the time to enjoy the community virus.”
“I know in which areas the Center wants us to monitor closely. But we are not going to play a “communal virus” here. We will fight this virus across the state where necessary, ”he said.
Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said that some people were trying to spread misinformation about the spread of the virus in Bengal. She said there is no alteration in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the state and that a team has been established to investigate the matter.
What will I achieve by hiding the cases of coronavirus in Bengal? Nothing can be accomplished through this. I told the Prime Minister during the meeting that patients with mild infections are responding to medications. He had previously briefed the Prime Minister on how we are updating our coronavirus statistics. It is unfortunate that even during such a crisis, there are people who play dirty politics, “he said.
During the meeting, Modi asked Banerjee to work in decongestion markets and the latter replied that he would work on it. Shortly after the meeting, the CM is said to have spoken to the respective police stations about the matter.
When asked about the virus hotspots, the prime minister said the administration refers to the hotspots as “macro planning of sensitive areas.”
“This will be done humanely. We will track and trace people. Adequate disinfection will be carried out. We will ensure that all emergency services are provided to residents of these areas. There is nothing to worry about. Like other states, we have also shown a map of sensitive areas during the meeting, ”he said.
She said the state also stressed during the meeting the importance of finding a balance between life and livelihood with a human face.
Regarding donations through corporate social responsibility (CSR), Banerjee said he has urged the prime minister to make CSR benefits available to all states. “There should be no discrimination between PMCARES and state-level aid funds,” he added.
She said she is against the resumption of international flight services and train services at this time. “We will allow bakeries to operate, but the proper protocol must be followed so that no violation occurs. Six new cases have been reported so far. There are 95 active patients, “he added.
Earlier in the day, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s cardiology and male medicine wards were sealed off after swab reports of two patients who died Friday tested positive.
The entire area was disinfected and patients undergoing treatment in the wards were transferred to other wings of the hospital. “We have prepared a list of 40 people, including doctors, nurses and health workers whose swab samples were collected and sent for testing,” said a senior health official.
