WhatsApp will soon feature ads.

WhatsApp has become one of the most popular cross-platform instant messaging applications worldwide. The giant owned by Facebook is now preparing to serve ads to its users. The app has been free for a long time, and as the app has reached over 150 million users worldwide, now is the right time to start showing ads.

While the ads would not disrupt regular chats, reports suggest the company will add these ads in WhatsApp status updates. It will be more or less similar to the Facebook and Instagram stories. The social media giant reportedly suspended development to show ads on the platform to avoid “antagonizing regulators.”

Since the chats are end-to-end encrypted, Facebook would use the phone number linked to the WhatsApp account to determine a match to a Facebook account to serve targeted ads.

WhatsApp has a large user base, which can be a great advantage for a company like Facebook. Leveraging the user base will generate a ton of advertising revenue, but at the same point, it could affect the number of active users. People with trust issues can start abandoning WhatsApp for apps like Telegram and Hike.

A Facebook spokesperson told Engadget that “in-state ads remain a long-term opportunity for WhatsApp.” While we won’t be seeing any announcements on WhatsApp anytime soon, it’s sure that one day it will go out to the masses. Not only will it pose privacy and security issues, but it could also lead to mass deletion of the app. However, a country like India could still stick with the long-term implementation.
