WhatsApp is introducing its disappearing messages feature into the app, which was rumored to be in the works. The disappearing messages aren’t exactly new. Applications like Telegram, Signal, Wire and Snapchat already offer that option. In case the messages disappear, a user can set a time limit for a particular message after which it will automatically disappear from the chat.
In a blog post, WhatsApp said: “Our goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to people as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. That’s why we are excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp. “The feature will also be implemented in individual and group chats.
WhatsApp is setting a seven-day limit after which messages sent to a chat will disappear. It is not offering a customizable option to users, where messages can disappear after a few seconds, hours, or days in other apps like Telegram, Signal, and Wire.
Whereas in a one-to-one chat, either person will have the option to enable or disable disappearing messages, group administrators will exercise this control. The feature will be rolled out to users everywhere this month and will apply across the Android, iOS, KaiOS, Web, and Desktop versions of the app. It might take some time before you see it in your app settings.
Regarding the seven day logic, the blog post reads: “” We started with 7 days because we think it offers the peace of mind that the conversations are not permanent, but are still practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about. . The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there for as long as you need it and then disappear when you don’t. “
How to activate messages that disappear on WhatsApp?
Open WhatsApp chat on Android or iOS and tap on the contact’s name, followed by the Disappearing Messages setting.
If prompted, touch Continue and select On.
If you want to disable disappearing messages, return to this setting and select Disable.
For group chats, the rights to activate disappearing messages will rest with the administrator. Follow the same steps in group chat to activate the feature.
Points to consider about the disappearance of messages in WhatsApp
When you activate this feature, if a user doesn’t open WhatsApp within seven days, the messages will disappear. But WhatsApp says that a message preview may still show in notifications until WhatsApp is opened.
When you reply to a message, the initial message is quoted. If you reply to a message that disappears, the quoted text may remain in the chat after seven days.
If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat where the user has disappearing messages, the message will not disappear in the forwarded chat.
If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.
Again, remember that the other person might forward or take a screenshot of the disappearing message and save it. If disappearing messages are turned on, the media sent in chat will disappear, but will be saved on the phone if automatic download is turned on.
