Why the victory in LB Nagar stands out
The BJP deployed several high-level leaders to the campaign, from Interior Minister Amit Shah to Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath, party chair JP Nadda, and several central ministers. But the main achievements of the party were in the areas of LB Nagar and Secunderabad. At Malkajgiri, where Adityanath made his launch of “renaming Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar”, the performance was not so good.
It’s the acting in LB Nagar that stands out.
This is because Secunderabad and the Hindu-dominated parts of the Old City have traditionally been a strong area for the BJP. His poor performance in the 2016 GHMC elections and the 2018 Assembly elections was not a true reflection of his strength.
Both elections should be seen as a by-product of the rise in TRS after the formation of the new state.
Therefore, the BJP was already strong in the area and it was only a matter of presenting itself as a viable alternative at the municipal level.
Therefore, the performance of LB Nagar should be considered an exception.
