I met Michael Kasprowicz recently, and he mentioned that when he took seven wickets in a test inning, his best numbers, there were two other seven fors in the same match. Was this a record? Amit Gadkari asked from India
Australian sailor Michael Kasprowicz won 7 for 36 for Australia against England at The Oval in 1997, and he’s right there were two others seven: Glenn McGrath had taken 7-for-76 in England’s first innings, and between Phil Tufnell claimed 7 for 66.
This was the only time that there were three seven fors in the same Test, although there was a statistically better return in Cape Town in 1889, in just the second Test that was played in South Africa: William “Gobo” Ashley took 7 for 95 in Out of England’s 292 total, Johnny Briggs collected 7 for 17 and 8 for 11 while South Africa was demolished by 47 and 43.
Rishabh Pant made two-ninety against the West Indies in late 2018. Has anyone won more in a series? Keersi Raj asked from India
India’s Rishabh Pant hit twice in that 2018-19 test series against the West Indies, scoring 92 each time. That was the 39th instance of a hitter who made two-ninety in a Test series, but was the first to have just two innings: the lowest previous was three, by Jeremy Coney for New Zealand against Australia in 1985-86, when he scored 98 in Christchurch and 93 in Auckland, the series having started with 101 not in Wellington.
But the clear winner is old Australian southpaw Clem Hill. In successive innings in the ashes of 1901-02, Hill was fired by 99 in Melbourne, then 98 and 97 on his homeland in Adelaide. He had another almost lack, with 87 points, in the Final Test in Melbourne.
What is the largest number of overs thrown by an individual in a trial game? Muhammad Raafay asked from Pakistan
Technically there are two answers to this question. The greatest number of individual shots delivered by a bowler in a Test is 146.1 (including 102.1 in the first innings), by England’s slow left point guard Bobby Peel, against Australia in Melbourne in 1885. But it was four balls, so overall he sent 585 deliveries, a number that has been exceeded multiple times in tests with six and eight balls above.
The record for over six balls is 129, by West Indies spinner Sonny Ramadhin against England at Edgbaston in 1957. Ramadhin delivered 774 balls in the match, the overall record, and his 98 plus (588 balls) in the second England’s entry is also the highest.
The largest number of eight balls in one Test is 95.6 (766 balls), by the English spinner Hedley Verity in the Timeless Test in Durban in 1939. South African Norman Gordon sent 92.2 more in that game (738 balls), the record for one bowler For the full list, click here.
Who took over 2000 wickets in first class cricket without playing in a Test? Gordon Brine asked from New Zealand
Throughout, 33 bowlers have taken 2,000 or more wickets in first-class cricket, and given the overall decline in matches these days, it seems unlikely that anyone will join them. Courtney Walsh, who finished with 1807 first-class wickets, is the only bowler with more than 1,500 to appear in the current century, and even retired in 2001.
The top 21 wicket bearers appeared on Test cricket, but three of the others who ended up with more than 2000 wicket did not. Seamer Jack Newman took 2054, mainly for Hampshire, while Gloucestershire slow left point guard George Dennett collected 2151. But the main wicket wielder among non-Test players is Glamorgan stalwart Don Shepherd, who took 2218. with its mid-beat cutters and spinners
James Faulkner took six wickets in his only test match for Australia, but without taking five in one inning. It made me wonder, what was the most amount of wickets taken in Test’s debut without a five for? Jack Nugee asked from England
I thought James Faulkner, whose only test came in The Oval in 2013, might be pretty high on this list, but in reality there are no fewer than 81 bowlers who took six or more wickets in debut without the help of a five for in any of the entrances
Thirteen of them took the maximum of eight, four in each inning, most recently South African affiliate Dane Piedt, 4-for-90 and 4-for-62 in his debut, against Zimbabwe in Harare in August 2014. The best debut numbers are 8 99 by (4 by 43 and 4 by 56) by Australian fast pitcher Laurie Mayne, against the West Indies at Kingston in 1964-65.
