New Delhi: What is it Swadeshi? Hours after Union Interior Minister Amit Shah announced that all canteens of the Central Police Armed Forces (CAPF) will sell only indigenous products, a wave of confusion spread through the ranks.
“We are awaiting a detailed order from the Interior Ministry on the definition of Swadeshi. Would it mean only Indian brands or will it even include foreign brands that are made in India, “DIG RM Meena, in charge of Central Police Canteen, told CNN-News18.
Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s call on Tuesday, during his nationwide speech, to make the country self-sufficient and use products made in India, Shah said that the CAPFs (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG and Assam Rifles) will sell only indigenous products from June 1 to 50 lakh relatives of approximately 10 lakhs of staff.
CAPF officials said that if the order allows all Indian manufactured products, including multinational brands like LG, Samsung, Procter and Gamble and Nestle, not to change much on the ground.
“Most of the international brands have their manufacturing plants in India. We source directly from them and even pay GST. The problem will arise only if we are asked to keep Indian brands like Haldiram or Patanjali. That would mean 70% of our inventory will be unusable, “said an ITBP official.
According to sources, the main officials of the Ministry of the Interior met on Wednesday night to decide on these modalities.
Authorities also noted that the June 1 deadline is too close if any major changes are to be made to existing items for sale. “If we are told that we do not stock international brands, then we will have to think quickly about how to acquire Indian brands for those products. In that case, the deadline is too close,” an official said.
CAPF dining rooms sell everything from groceries to electronics and even cars. Only liquor is not sold in these dining rooms. According to the MHA estimate, the decision to go Swadeshi It would affect the income of Rs 2,800 crore, 10 lakh of paramilitary personnel and 50 lakh of relatives and veterans dependent on paramilitary kitchens.
In October last year, Interior Minister Amit Shah first suggested that CAPF soup kitchens be Swadeshi, including food, stationery, uniforms, etc. for use in homes and offices. Then also Swadeshi it was defined as “made in the country”. The 1,700 CPCs expect the same definition to continue in the new order as well, which is expected on Thursday.
