On May 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the midst of ongoing phase three on the shutdown. But while most Indians were waiting with great difficulty for details on the fourth extension of the blockade, the prime minister chose to speak instead about a new economic scheme called “Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan”.

But it seems that some Indians really did not understand what he meant. Or at least they are struggling to do it.

In his speech, the Prime Minister announced an economic package of Rs 20 lakh crore under the “Athmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan” with the aim of helping the country out of the coronavirus crisis, making it self-sufficient.

According to the Prime Minister, the amount was equal to 10 percent of India’s GDP. “Starting tomorrow, the finance minister will brief him in detail on the package intended to lead to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan,'” he said.

While the address was heard by millions of Indians through the platforms, some seemed to have difficulty understanding the meaning of some of the Hindi words used by him in the address. Within an hour of the speech, Google searches increased with many Indians searching for the meaning of terms like “aatmanirbhar” (self-sufficient).

A look at Google trends suggests an increase in searches for the term in the last hour since Modi’s speech at 8pm. Among those who searched, residents of Karnataka Telangana had the highest number of searches. Which means that many of the residents in the state apparently had trouble understanding what the prime minister meant.

States like Maharashtra and Gujarat followed with the third and fourth highest searches for “aatmanirbhar” respectively.

Not just Google, many even turned to the microblogging site Twitter for some immediate answers.
