West Bengal Minister Suvendu Adhikari resigns from cabinet

In what may be a sign of a severance of ties with the Trinamool Congress, West Bengal Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the cabinet led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday. Mr. Adhikari also has the Irrigation portfolio. You have sent your resignation to both the Chief Minister and the Governor

“Today at 1:05 pm a letter of resignation from Mr. Suvendu Adhikari from his post as Minister was sent to me. The issue will be approached from a constitutional perspective, ”Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted, sharing the screenshot of the resignation letter on social media. In the resignation letter, Mr. Adhikari has urged “immediate acceptance” of his resignation. “I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of the State, which I did with commitment, dedication and sincerity,” he said.

Own support base

According to sources close to the leader, he has also renounced the security provided by the government. On Thursday, the prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress had resigned as chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC). The 49-year-old leader, who has a support base of his own and had played a crucial role in the forced acquisition of land in Nandigram, has been charting a different course for himself in recent months. In recent months, he has held several individual rallies without the symbols and flags of the Trinamool Congress. His posters have appeared in almost every district in the state, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Despite resigning as Minister and seeking security withdrawal, Mr. Adhikari remains a member of the judiciary and has not resigned from the party so far.

The Trinamool Congress delegated Representative Saugata Roy to speak with him. Mr. Roy had some meetings with Mr. Adhikari, but it seems he has not been able to break the ice.

Trinamool enters a group

While Mr. Roy maintained that Mr. Adhikari was still a member of TMC’s MLA and a party member, the ruling Bengal party met to assess the situation. Senior leaders such as Firhad Hakim, Subrata Bakshi and Partha Chatterjee held a meeting at the residence of the Chief Minister.

Party sources said that the Chief Minister had not accepted the resignation of Mr. Adhikari.

BJP says open doors

West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh said that Adhikari had given many clues and that today’s decision was only a matter of time.

“Our doors are open to him. Senior leaders like Mukul Roy have come and are working with us, ”he noted. He described the development as the “beginning or end of the Trinamool Congress.”

TMC MLA for Delhi

In another development, Mihir Goswami, TMC MLA from Coochbehar Dakshin, went to Delhi and is likely to join the BJP.

Goswami, who has spoken out against TMC seeking the services of political strategist Prashant Kishore on Thursday, has said that he has decided to resign from the party. He resigned from the party’s main membership on Friday.
