Calcutta:
Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, condemning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments about an attack on the convoy of BJP chief JP Nadda, asked her to withdraw them and warned today: “Ma’am, please don’t play with fire.” .
Mr Dhankhar presented a report to the central government this morning on the “deterioration” of the law and order situation in Bengal, after which the state police chief and the chief secretary were summoned on Monday.
Nadda’s convoy was attacked with bricks, stones and sticks near Calcutta on Thursday afternoon. Some leaders were injured and cars were damaged in the incident, which the BJP said was the work of supporters of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. The incident took place in Diamond Harbor, the parliamentary constituency of the Chief Minister’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.
“The events that happened yesterday are very regrettable,” Dhankhar said.
He detailed how he had summoned the chief of police and the secretary general for the incident and they arrived without any report. “It surprised me, it embarrassed me. A very painful day in government,” he said.
Dhankhar also criticized Mamata Banerjee for her comments mocking Nadda and questioning whether the attack was organized.
“I take a very serious note of the statement made by the prime minister. How can a responsible prime minister, who believes in the rule of law, believes in the Constitution and believes in the rich Bengali culture, speak as he did? – Madam Please reflect, please keep a little dignity and grace, and remove those words, “he said.
The governor also referred to Ms Banerjee blaming the incident on “outsiders causing trouble.”
“Madam Chief Minister, India is one, Indians are one, please do not play or fan this kind of fire. It is under oath of the constitution, please respect it. Who is an outsider, who is an intern, please do not enjoy these kinds of statements, “he said.
