Vodafone Idea said on Monday that it is rebranding, and the Vodafone and Idea brands are now “Vi”. Since the merger of Vodafone and Idea Cellular, the company has focused on “integrating the two great networks, our people and processes,” said Vodafone Idea CEO Ravinder Takkar. The company’s rebranding initiative comes amid intense competition in the country’s highly indebted telecommunications sector.
“Today I am pleased to introduce Vi, a brand that will bring significant meaning to the lives of our customers. The Indians are optimistic and want to get ahead in life, “Takkar said.
“They would love a trusted partner to help them on this journey. Vi’s positioning builds on this promise and it will focus on meeting customer needs to help them prosper.”
The name Vi is much more than an abbreviation for Vodafone and Idea. Vi, read as ‘we’ reflects the collective nature of Indian society, the company said.
Vodafone Plc’s Indian division merged with Idea Cellular in August 2018. However, both Vodafone and Idea had maintained two separate brand identities to date.
“The integration of two brands is the culmination of the largest telecommunications integration in the world,” said Vodafone Idea.
Vodafone Idea is trying to keep its business in India afloat after the Supreme Court last week gave telecom companies 10 years to pay adjusted gross income (AGR) installments.
On Friday, Vodafone Idea had declared its intention to raise fresh capital of up to Rs 25 billion to pay the high fees owed to the government. It plans to raise up to 15 billion rupees through bonds and an equal amount through the issuance of shares and guarantees.
