Vizag gas leak: opposition expresses pain and demands investigation

Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the loss of life in a gas leak at a Visakhapatnam chemical factory on Thursday amid demands for a probe and the relocation of the plant outside the city.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu expressed their sadness at the accident that left at least 11 people dead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with concerned officials and assured attendance to Andhra Pradesh Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. “I pray for the safety and well-being of everyone in Visakhapatnam,” said Modi.

Bharatiya Janata Party President (BJP) JP Nadda called on party workers to work in coordination with the local administration to help those affected. Senior BJP leader and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah described the tragedy as “disturbing” and said the central government was closely monitoring the situation.

Congressman Rahul Gandhi expressed shock at the incident.

“… I urge our workers and leaders in Congress in the area to provide all the necessary support and assistance to those affected. My condolences to the families of those who have perished. I pray that the hospitalized will recover quickly, ”he said on Twitter.

Rajasthan Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, while Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot called the incident “sad and unfortunate.”

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the main opposition in Andhra Pradesh, demanded that LG Polymers, the poisonous gas that leaked from one of its plants, be transferred outside the city.

In a letter to Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, TDP President and former Prime Minister N Chandrababu Naidu demanded that the plant be closed immediately and a thorough investigation into the gas leak be ordered.

“After the investigation, it is necessary to change the entire unit to the Special Economic Zone (EEZ) that has no population nearby,” he suggested.

Naidu also requested permission from the Center to go to Visakhapatnam on a special flight to “monitor” relief activities and support those affected.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded a judicial investigation into the incident.

“This Vizag industrial accident sets off alarms reminding us of the horrible tragedy of the Bhopal gas leak. Deepest condolences. We demand a thorough investigation and adequate compensation for those affected. The responsibility must be fixed, ”said CPI (M) Secretary General Sitaram Yechury.
