Tension prevailed outside the front door of LG Polymers at RR Venkatapuram in Visakhapatnam, while villagers carrying four bodies, who died from the styrene monomer gas leak, staged a protest, demanding the company change, here the Saturday.
The incident occurred when Andhra Pradesh DGP D. Goutam Sawang was visiting the crash site.

More than 100 villagers carrying four corpses staged a protest demanding that the company have to be changed, as they now have to live with an ever-present danger.
The police had to resort to a slight lathi charge to mitigate the situation. But they left only after Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar Meena intervened and assured them to investigate their complaints.

It may be recalled that in the early hours of Thursday, around 3.30 in the morning, the styrene monomer vapor escaped from one of the two styrene storage tanks and engulfed the village of RR Venkatapuram and four other villages in the surroundings, covering a radius of 1.5 to 3 km. Inhaling the poisonous gas, 12 people died and more than 300 were hospitalized.
Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy immediately announced a package of ₹ 1 crore to the deceased’s family, jobs to a family member, and a host of other relief packages.

“We are happy with the package announced by the CM, but we are not satisfied with the attitude of the company. So far they haven’t come out and confronted us, didn’t even bother asking about our well-being. This is a chemical plant and cannot be located in the middle of a densely populated room. We demand his immediate change, as we now have to live with this danger, “said K. Appanna, a RR Venkatapuram resident, who lost his uncle in the incident.
