Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray is likely to suggest an extension of the 3: 0 blockade restrictions, which were further extended from May 4 for 14 days in 130 districts across the country that have emerged as points critics of coronavirus disease (Covid-19), all the way through – May during the CM video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled for Monday afternoon.
The CM will promote the application of stricter rules for the red zones and the implementation of some more relaxations in the orange and green zones.
Thackeray is expected to draw the prime minister’s attention to the plight of stranded migrant workers and demand their evacuation as soon as possible on special trains.
Maharashtra has recorded more than 10,000 positive cases of Covid-19 in the past 10 days, as the overall count increased to 22,171 and 832 deaths as of Sunday night.
State authorities face a great challenge in ensuring restrictions in containment areas, such as the congested slums of Dharavi in Mumbai and parts of Pune. Visiting core teams have also raised a similar concern.
Previously, CM Thackeray had hinted at extending the blockade until the end of May in the metropolitan regions of Mumbai and Pune, which have become the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in Maharashtra.
“The CM has been urging the Center to organize special trains to repatriate stranded migrant workers as soon as possible. However, some states are reluctant to recover migrants, ”said a state government official.
The Maharashtra government is also expected to request the deployment of central forces in the containment areas in a bid to alleviate the stressed-out state police force.
Thackeray, in his speech via Facebook Live on Saturday, said he could request the deployment of additional force from the Center, as many members of the state police staff have become ill due to Covid-19 related stress. “We will request the deployment of an additional security force from the Center, if necessary,” CM had said.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to discuss the extension of the blockade and also an alternative exit plan by opening economic activities across the country, which have been suspended since March 25 to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.
