If you’ve been tuning in to IPL for the past few seasons, you probably know that Royal Challengers Bangalore is the butt of jokes online due to their mediocre performances on the pitch.
Take this: In 2019, RCBs came last on the table after incurring 8 losses. 2018 saw a similar story with the Men in Red failing to qualify for the playoffs, while in 2017 RCB lost 10 of its 14 designated matches. It hasn’t helped that the team hasn’t lifted a single trophy since the league’s inception even though big names have joined the franchise over the years.

But Monday was a different day as Virat Kohli-led RCB started their IPL 2020 journey on a positive note after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad comprehensively in Dubai.
Young starter Devdutt Padikkal starred in his debut before Yuvzvendra Chahal produced a deft spell to set up a 10-run win for the Virat Kohli-led team, sending social media and RCB critics into a frenzy. It may be too early to notice this in the tournament, but the victory pushed RCB to the top of the table, sending the “enemies” underground.

Padikkal 56 (42) showed his talents half a century before AB de Villiers (51 of 30) took over and provided the much-needed final flourish to bring RCB to 163 for five after they were sent at bat.
Chasing 164 for a win, SRH went all for 153 in 19.4 overs. The Sunrisers were on their way to a comfortable chase with Jonny Bairstow (61 of 43) sporting a sinister touch. But Yuzvendra Chahal’s exceptional spell (3/18) caused a collapse from which SRH could not recover.
