Kohli and his wife, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, discussed their lives and careers in an online session with students on how to motivate themselves.
“The first time I was rejected in the state election, I remember it was late at night and I just cried,” said the 31-year-old cricket superstar.
“I howled until three in the morning and I couldn’t believe it.”
“Because I had good results, everything was going perfectly. I acted until I reached that stage and was rejected.”
“And I kept asking my coach for two hours, why didn’t it happen? And I couldn’t understand it. But when there is passion and commitment, that motivation comes back to you.”
Kohli made his debut for the Delhi home state in 2006 before joining the national team two years later in a one-day international against Sri Lanka.
Since then he has broken records on the road to accumulating 7,240 races, including 27 centuries and 22 years 50 in 86 tests.
His marriage to Anushka in 2017 has become the center of attention on him and Kohli credited his wife for improving his temper.
“To be honest, the patience I learned since Anushka and I met. I was very impatient before,” said Kohli. The couple met in 2013 when they filmed an advertisement for shampoo.
“The mutual learning we’ve had from looking at his personality and composure in situations has really inspired me to fight.
“Even when things are difficult, you have to swallow your ego and keep being there in adversity, keep fighting to get out and eventually you will find a way.”
“So that’s what I’ve seen her do and I’ve learned from that.”
Kohli said he can now apply the attribute “where things are totally against him.”
“Sometimes you have to hit a test match for two hours over 20 runs, but the team wants you to do that. So you should be able to do it.”
