The Citizenship Amendment Law will be implemented soon in West Bengal, BJP National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya said on Saturday. Vijayvargiya, the caretaker for BJP Bengala who was speaking to reporters in Thakurnagar in Parganas 24 North district, which is largely inhabited by the backward Matua community, said nothing in the contentious National Register of Citizens.
“Even if the government of West Bengal opposes the implementation of CAA, we (Center) will move forward with its implementation. If the state supports the implementation it will be fine, “he said. The national president of the BJP, JP Nadda, during his recent visit to the state, had said that rules for the implementation of the law are being worked out. The CAA will be implemented in letter and spirit thereafter.
To a categorical question about the NRC implementation, Vijayvargiya answered dryly “We are talking about the CAA implementation here.” Bongaon BJP deputy Shantanu Thakur, a member of the Matua community, later told reporters: “We hope Union Interior Minister Amit Shah will make the announcement on the implementation of the CAA during his visit to Thakurnagar. . The Matuas, who have a sizeable population in the state, are lower-caste Hindu refugees who migrated to West Bengal from neighboring Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) during the Partition and in the decades after. Permanent citizenship has been a long-standing demand within the Matua community.
Party sources said that Vijayvargiya and Thakur held discussions on Shah’s proposed visit to Thakurnagar, the community’s headquarters, soon.
