Veteran actor Vishal Anand, best known for appearing in the 1976 hit film Chalte Chalte, passed away Sunday after a prolonged illness, his family said in a statement Monday. He was 82 years old. The actor, whose real name was Bhisham Kohli, appeared in several Hindi films in the 1970s, including Hindustan Ki Kasam Y Taxi driver. However, it was Chalte Chalte, also starring Simi Garewal, which earned Anand praise and fame. In a statement shared by Vishal Anand’s nephew, actor Purab Kohli, the family said the veteran star passed away at noon Sunday. “She hasn’t been in good health for the past few months. We’d like people to remember her from the 1976 song and movie. Chalte Chalte. Our prayers are with him, may he rest in peace. We kindly request members of the press and media to respect the family’s privacy during this sad time, “the family said in the statement.
Vishal Anand had also produced Chalte Chalte and is credited with giving veteran music composer Bappi Lahiri his big break with Sunder Dar conducting.
Songs from the thriller, including that of Kishore Kumar Chalte Chalte Mere Ye Geet Yaad Rakhna Y Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, sung by Shailendra and Lata Mangeshkar, became a hit on the charts.
Vishal Anand also appeared in Dil Se Mile Dil (1978) and directed the protagonist of Mithun Chakraborty Kismet in 1980.
