A cyclonic storm is expected off the coast of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry in the next 24 hours due to well-marked low pressure over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. Cyclone Gati is likely to make landfall between Karaikal in Puducherry and Mamallapuram in northern Tamil Nadu on November 24-25.
“It is very likely that the well-marked low pressure over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal will further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours and move towards the coast of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry. It is likely to cross between Karaikal and Mamallapuram on November 25 in the afternoon, ”he told ANI S Balachandran of IMD Chennai.
“The very severe cyclonic storm ‘GATI’ over the southwestern Arabian Sea moved westward and centered over the southwestern Arabian Sea near Latitude 10.4 ° N and Longitude 51.5 ° E, about 40 km to the east of the coast of Somalia and 90 km south-southeast of Ras Binnah (Somalia) today at 5.30 pm IST, ”IMD tweeted.
“The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and contiguous southeast of the Bay of Bengal persists. It is very likely that it will concentrate in a depression over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours and further intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, “added IMD.
Boats and fishermen should avoid venturing into the open sea until Nov.25 as a precaution, IMD said, as the approaching depression will increase wind speeds, especially in coastal areas. On November 25, when the cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall, the wind speed is expected to rise to 80-90 km / h with gusts of 100 km / h from the current 40-50 km / h.
