New Delhi:
The sentence in the 28-year case involving the demolition of the Babri Masjid, an event that changed the political landscape and social fabric of the country, will be handed down on September 30. The IWC special judge SK Yadav will deliver the verdict, he has asked all the defendants, including BJP veterans LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and senior leader Uma Bharti, to be present in court.
The three, key party leaders at the time, are charged with a conspiracy that led to the demolition of the 15th century mosque in December 1992. The Kar Sevaks who tore it down believed it to be on the site of an ancient temple that it marked the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Advani, 92, had recorded his statement in the mosque demolition case before the IWC special court via video conference on July 24. Joshi, 86, recorded his statement a day before Advani. Both have denied all the charges against them.
In July, Uma Bharti told NDTV that she “doesn’t care” what the ruling will be in the case. “If they send me to the gallows, I will be blessed. The place where I was born will be happy,” she told NDTV.
