The Bihar government has focused its attention on vegetable vendors after migrants to verify the possible spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the state.
The instructions from the health department to all district magistrates (DM) to show vegetable vendors in the markets came the day Prime Minister Nitish Kumar discussed the state’s strategy with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deal with to the increasing numbers of Sars-Cov-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease.
In separate letters, the chief secretary of the health department, Sanjay Kumar, on Monday instructed DMs from all 38 districts to collect samples from vegetable vendors, mainly in urban markets, and analyze them for Covid-19.
Kumar cited the examples from Chennai and Delhi and said that vegetable vendors, who have not been sampled in the state, were discovered as the super spreaders in those places.
In light of the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases among migrants, who arrived in the state during the shutdown, the chief secretary instructed DMs to sample immigrants, high-risk individuals, and vegetable vendors beginning Tuesday.
However, DMs have been told to restrict sampling to 50 so that their tests can be processed within 24 hours.
