Varavara Rao receives treatment for urinary tract infection at Nanavati hospital

Poet and activist Varavara Rao, imprisoned in the Bhima Koregaon case, is being treated for a urinary tract infection at Mumbai Nanavati Hospital, where he was transferred Wednesday night, said a doctor who did not want to be identified.

The 81-year-old activist’s family from Hyderabad is expected to arrive in Mumbai on Friday. He was transferred to Nanavati Hospital for 15 days on the instructions of the Bombay High Court, which noted that Rao was almost on his deathbed.

“It is stable. We are currently treating him for a urinary tract infection. We are also conducting more diagnoses of his dementia. Until we get all the test reports, we cannot comment on your health. He is currently admitted to the general ward without any oxygen support ”, said the hospital doctor requesting anonymity since he is not authorized to speak to the media.

The high court had ordered the state government on Wednesday to transfer Rao from Taloja prison to Nanavati hospital.

In July, Rao was treated at the state-run St George Hospital after he tested positive for Covid-19.

During his treatment, he was diagnosed with neurological problems. Later, when neurologists at JJ Hospital examined him, they diagnosed him with delirium, a state of mind characterized by concerns, illusions and inconsistencies.

As the activist needed specialized neurological and urological treatment, he was transferred to the Nanavati Hospital.

Rao was arrested in 2018 and charged under the strict anti-terrorism law on the prevention of illicit activities. Along with him, nine other activists were accused of plotting violence with the Maoists and making provocative speeches at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017.
