Uttarakhand government fires suspended judge for torturing minor

The Uttarakhand government has removed a civilian judge from the service for allegedly torturing a minor who was working as a domestic worker at his Haridwar residence.

The government issued a notice for the termination of the services of the suspended Deepali Sharma, civil judge (higher division), while accepting the decision of the Uttarakhand high court regarding the same. The government notice was uploaded to the superior court’s website on Monday.

According to the notification issued by the additional chief secretary Radha Raturi, the full high court approved a resolution on 14 October recommending the removal of Sharma and sent it to the state government.

The notification indicated that Governor Baby Rani Maurya had granted permission for the dismissal.

Deepali Sharma, the then civil judge in Haridwar, is accused of physically and mentally abusing a minor and keeping her in his residence as a domestic worker. The police rescued the girl and a case was registered at the Sidkul Police Station in Haridwar.

In January 2018, the Uttarakhand HC had suspended Sharma, after the police rescued the 14-year-old girl from her residence in Haridwar. Taking notice of the matter, the HC had ordered the Haridwar District Judge to investigate the matter.
