New Delhi:
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned today when the state’s BJP ruler chose to correct course a year before the election, amid growing resentment in the ranks. His departure was safe after his trip yesterday to Delhi, where he had met with the BJP leadership.
Rawat, 60, surrendered his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya within days of completing four years in power, becoming the last Uttarakhand legacy of senior ministers who retired before the term. For the first time, he was elected by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the BJP swept the Uttarakhand elections in 2017, winning 57 seats in the 69-member assembly. Congress won only 11 seats.
“I have been working in politics for a while and my party gave me the opportunity to work as the prime minister of the state for four years, the golden years of my life. Despite being of rural origin, I was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the state, that is only possible in a party like the BJP, ”said Rawat.
“Now that party has made a collective decision to entrust the responsibility of the chief minister of the state to some other leader.”
One minister of state, Dhan Singh Rawat, is widely inclined to take over as chief minister. Dhan Singh Rawat, who was in Garhwal, took a private helicopter to the state capital, Dehradun, this afternoon.
The BJP legislative party in Uttarakhand will meet tomorrow to elect a new leader.
Trivendra Singh Rawat had several meetings in Delhi with BJP leaders, who allegedly received comments from the party’s MLAs in Uttarakhand that the sub-par performance of the Chief Minister would cost the party in elections scheduled for February.
The decision to replace him a year before the elections is unusual, as it is often seen as a vote of no confidence by the party in its own government. It is also a rare move by the BJP to replace a Chief Minister for non-compliance.
Former Congressional Chief Minister Harish Rawat attacked the BJP, calling Rawat’s impeachment an admission of failure. Even Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, which is trying to register its presence in Uttarakhand, commented. “By changing Prime Minister, the BJP has given in even before 2022. In four years, the BJP did not do a single thing on the basis of which it can seek votes. They are trying to hide their failures by changing face. he should apologize to the people of Uttarakhand for missing four years, “the party’s Manish Sisodia tweeted.
Rawat’s government had come under scrutiny for its handling of the Chamoli flash flood. His decision to push for work on projects suspended by the Supreme Court was criticized.
Yesterday, before meeting Rawat, BJP chief JP Nadda held talks with Interior Minister Amit Shah and BJP leader BL Santosh about the situation in the mountainous state.
Talks about a leadership change in Uttarakhand intensified after two central party observers, Raman Singh and Dushyant Gautam, were sent to Dehradun on Saturday for an evaluation.
The two leaders spoke with MLA, ministers and also with the Chief Minister and leaders of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), the ideological mentor of the BJP. His report to the party chairman apparently recommended changes and damage control. Both leaders return to Dehradun to attend the MLA meeting.
Many MLAs had reportedly told leaders that the BJP has no chance of being reelected under Rawat’s leadership.
Critics of Rawat accused him of not communicating with them or taking everyone with them. The low-key politician also upset many in his party with his style of operation. The MLA reportedly pointed out to the party that the Prime Minister had been rated “below average” by some opinion polls.
