US FDA Investigating ‘About Five’ Allergic Reactions to Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

WASHINGTON [US]: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating approximately five cases of people having allergic reactions to the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19, said Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biological Research and Evaluation from the FDA.

“It is fair to say that some allergic reactions have been reported in different union states. I think the total that is under investigation is about five,” Marks said during a call to the media Friday night.

The FDA official said that a component of the vaccine, polyethylene glycol, may be the cause of the allergic reactions seen in both the United Kingdom and the United States following the launch of mass inoculation programs.

More than a week ago, two UK medical professionals experienced an allergic reaction after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Similar reactions were also seen in the US state of Alaska more recently.

The FDA approved the emergency use of a candidate vaccine produced by Moderna late Friday, although the regulatory body cautioned that people with a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccine compounds should not be inoculated at this stage.
