New Delhi:
Greeting the country in Dussehra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminded people to stay “vocal for the local” while shopping for festivals during his monthly radio address, Mann ki Baat, today. He also urged people to practice the virtue of patience to overcome the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and stay safe during celebrations.
During the 70th edition of Mann ki Baat, Prime Minister Modi asked people to prioritize buying more locally made products for festivals as a way to revive the country’s economy.
“When we talk about festivals and prepare for them, the first thing that comes to mind is going to the market. This time when you go shopping, remember your determination to vocalize locally. When buying produce from the market, we have to priority to local products, “he said.
He also gave examples of Yoga, Mallakhamb and Khadi as Indian practices and products that are now celebrated globally.
“This time at Gandhi Jayanti, people bought a good worth more than 1 million rupees at the Khadi store in Connaught Place in Delhi. Similarly, Khadi masks are also becoming very popular during the coronavirus pandemic. Not only is the popularity of Khadi (woven hand-woven) also being produced in many places around the world. There is a place in Mexico called Oaxaca, there are many towns in this area where the locals weave khadi. Today, the khadi of this place has gained popularity with the name Oaxaca Khaadi … Now Oaxaca Khadi has become a brand. The website of this project bears the inscription ‘The symbol of Dharma in motion’ “, said the Prime Minister.
He also urged people to take pride in their heritage.
“As India becomes more vocal about local, the world is also becoming a fan of our local products … When we are proud of our things, the world’s curiosity about us also increases. Like our spirituality, yoga has attracted everyone, “he said.
The Prime Minister’s first voice for local momentum was made during the monthly radio address in May. The call to buy “made in India” products forms the basis of the government’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-sufficient India)” to help the economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
Since then, he has suggested it as a way to revive India’s traditional wooden toy-making industry.
The renewed emphasis on buying local products comes just days after the government ordered 4,000 army stores in the country to stop buying imported products.
