Vaccine
COVID-19 vaccine delivery poses great challenge
The government recently said it will purchase the vaccine and distribute it under a special COVID-19 immunization program to four categories of people, free of charge. The priority groups named are healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and ASHA workers, a second category that includes frontline workers, including the police and military, the third category of those over 50, and finally those under 50 with comorbidities.
“All of that sounds like a simple sort order, but it is not. Difficult decisions may be necessary. For example, when there is not enough supply to offer vaccines to everyone who would otherwise qualify, which group will be given priority? ”Asks Dr. Gagandeep Kang, professor of microbiology at CMC Vellore in an email to The Hindu.
Deciding who to vaccinate first may be dictated by the characteristics of the vaccines that are initially available, such as those that are more effective in the younger population than in the elderly. “So we shouldn’t vaccinate the elderly? Is there a bar below which vaccines should not be used in a particular group? As soon as we move beyond characterizing the big picture of the initial priority groups, there are more questions to discuss than clear answers, ”he says.
