Gandhinagar:
The BJP is on the brink of a clean sweep in Gujarat’s general election, with the party winning three and leading in five segments of the Assembly. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani called the impending victory a “preview of the upcoming elections”; the state will hold plenary elections for the Assembly in 2022.
“Congress is a sinking ship … they have lost connection with the people. The results are against them everywhere. It is a party without leadership. The results (the Gujarat parliamentary elections) are an advance of the next local elections, “said Mr. Rupani said on Tuesday.
Rupani said voters had rejected the “negative campaign and activities” of Congress in Gujarat and other states where by-elections were held on November 3-7, including Madhya Pradesh and UP. The BJP is also poised to emerge as the largest party in Bihar, where full elections were held.
In Gujarat, the BJP has won the seats of Abdasa, Morbi and Karjan and leads in Dangs, Dhari, Gadhada, Kaprada and Limbdi.
Pradhyumansinh Jadeja of the BJP has beaten Dr. Shantilal Senghani from Congress for Abdasa’s seat by 36,778 votes. Brijesh Merja has beaten JJ Patel of the Morbi Congress by 4,649 votes and Akshaykumar Patel has won in Karjan, by 16,425 votes, against JK Dolubha of the Congress.
In other seats, at 4:22 p.m. the gap between the BJP and Congressional candidates was more than 44,000 in Dangs, more than 41,000 in Kaprada and more than 31,000 in Limdbi. The BJP’s lead in Gadhada was more than 20,000 at the beginning of the day, but has since dropped to around 18,000.
In Dhari, the BJP advantage is around 15,000.
A total of 81 candidates contested last week’s by-elections, which were held amid tight restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, for which a 60.75 percent voter turnout was recorded.
The by-elections were necessary after the incumbent MLAs in Congress resigned before the June elections in Rajya Sabha. These resignations helped the BJP win three of four seats in the Upper House.
Five of these MLAs later joined the BJP and are contesting these by-elections on the ruling party’s list.
These five are JV Kakadia from Dhari, Mr Merja from Morbi, Jitu Chaudhary from the Kaprada seat reserved for tribes, Akshaykumar Patel from Karajan and Mr Jadeja from Abdasa.
The BJP won 99 of the 182 Assembly seats in the 2017 elections, and Congress won 77. The remaining six were divided between the NCP, the Bharatiya Tribal Party and independent candidates.
By-elections for more than 50 seats in the Assembly (and a constituency of Lok Sabha) were held on November 3-7, and the results of these elections will be announced today. A large part of these are in Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP is winning by 20 seats.
