Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh:
In an alleged dishonorable homicide case, a 14-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly killed by her father with the help of her older brother after she became pregnant and refused to tell them who the girl’s father was.
“The matter came to light on Tuesday when villagers found the body of a girl with her head severed in the village of Dulhapur in the Sidhauli area and informed the police,” Police Superintendent S Anand told the agency today. News Press Trust of India.
“During the investigation it was found that she was six months pregnant and it was suspected that she was related to someone. Prima facie appeared to be a case of dishonorable homicide and the girl’s father was questioned,” said the policeman.
The defendant told police the girl was killed on Sept. 24, but the family did not approach the police, they said.
The Police Superintendent said that according to the girl’s father, his daughter was pregnant and when he asked him about the person responsible, “she did not reveal her name, so he strangled her.”
The police officer said that the defendant wanted to marry his daughter to the man with whom she was in a relationship.
“After killing his daughter, he disposed of the body near a ‘nullah’ (drain) after cutting off her head,” the SP told the Press Trust of India.
His brother ran away after the incident, while his father was arrested.
“The girl’s older brother is also involved in the murder and we have registered them under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (resulting in missing evidence) of the IPC,” said a local police spokesman.
Police are also trying to identify the person responsible for the girl’s pregnancy, he said, adding that the matter is under investigation.
