UP Government Will Screen People Coming From Delhi Amid Rise In Covid-19 Cases

Uttar Pradesh government officials said Sunday they will test people traveling to the state from the national capital amid the coronavirus disease outbreak.

“We will be testing people coming from Delhi by plane, bus or train, following the increase in Covid-19 cases in the national capital. We are discussing the number of people allowed to attend weddings or events, ”UP Chief Secretary RK Tiwari told ANI.

New Delhi, the hardest hit city in the country, has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks in what has been dubbed the third wave of Covid-19 in the national capital. States such as Maharashtra have said they are considering cutting travel for people traveling from Delhi to avoid transmission of the infection to their states.

The move comes days after Noida began conducting random tests at the border with people from Delhi.

After Noida, the Haryana Gurugram and Faridabad authorities also began randomly testing travelers traveling from Delhi.

District authorities in the two states said such tests were being conducted to prevent Covid-19 cases from spiraling out of control, as Delhi remains one of the most affected hot spots for the infectious disease in the country, recording 8,593 cases in one day recently.

The increase in coronavirus cases in Delhi has been witnessed since October 28, when the daily increase surpassed the 5,000 mark for the first time and surpassed the 8,000 mark on November 11.

Delhi recorded 5,879 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday and a positivity rate of 12.90 percent, while 111 more deaths brought the death toll to 8,270.
