On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh announced the temporary relaxation of state labor laws after it passed a cabinet-approved ordinance on the matter. The BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath announced the relaxation to attract new companies to invest in the state amid the current coronavirus crisis.
A total of 38 labor laws have been temporarily relaxed for 1,000 days to boost the industrial and commercial sector as thousands of workers have returned to the state.
The only laws that will continue to be applicable will be Section 5 of the Wage Payment Act of 1936, the Workers’ Compensation Act of 1932, the bonded Labor System Act (Abolition) of 1976, and the Construction Workers and Other Construction Workers Act of 1996.
An official statement issued by the government said that economic and commercial activities in the state have been severely affected by the spread of the coronavirus.
“In order to boost existing businesses and attract new industrial activities to the state, certain relaxations must be given on a temporary basis. That is why an ordinance called ‘Uttar Pradesh Temporary Exemption from the Ordinance on Certain Labor Laws, 2020’ has been introduced in this regard, “he said.
Congress criticized the state government for relaxing labor laws, and the head of the party’s state unit, Ajay Kumar Lallu, said the government only cares about big business and not workers’ rights.
“The UP government has introduced a black law for workers in the state and they have now suspended existing labor laws for three years,” he said. “These laws saved labor rights, but now the government has suspended labor laws for the next three years, literally taking away workers’ rights.”
