LUCKNOW / NOIDA: The Government of Uttar Pradesh has given special incentives to the South Korean electronic giant Samsung to start production at its 4.825 million rupee phone display manufacturing unit in Noida. The UP cabinet approved a proposal in this regard under UP Electronics Manufacturing Policy-2017.
Samsung Display Noida Private Limited, which is a few months away from starting production at its phone display manufacturing unit in Noida, is the first in India and only the third in the world to have OLED technology assembly facilities. This is also the first major project to move from China to India during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Initially, the company was investing only Rs 1,500 crore in the unit. Its construction started in late 2019. However, around March, the company increased its investment to Rs 4,825 crore. The basic manufacturing of OLED screens used for mobiles is done in Korea but assembly is done in China and Vietnam. Samsung has moved its machinery from China to India and production is scheduled to begin in April 2021, ”said Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (IT & Electronics).
In 2018, Samsung established the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in the Noida 81 sector. Under the recently launched Boosting digital India campaign, Samsung wanted to start new manufacturing facilities in the country. Having established the world’s largest mobile factory in Noida sector 81, the company was looking to expand its operations within the 35-acre facility. The company plans to dedicate a large part of the entire facility to the production of mobile displays.
South Korean company officials during their discussions with senior UP government officials revealed that the display production plant in Noida will be gradually expanded to meet global demands for mobile displays and that the entire facility is set to transform into manufacturing. global. company hub.
A government spokesperson said that during the previous financial year, Samsung, with an export of $ 2.7 billion, was the largest exporter from Uttar Pradesh. “An export target of $ 50 billion has been set for the next five years. Under the UP Electronics 2017 Manufacturing Policy, Samsung will get an exemption from stamp duty on land transfer. The state government will make a financial provision of Rs 250 million for this project over the next five years, ”he said.
The official added that the company will also receive financial incentives of Rs 460 crore under the Center’s ‘Electronic Component and Semiconductor Manufacturing Promotion Scheme’. More than 70% of the total display products used in televisions, mobile phones, tablets, watches, etc. Worldwide, the official added, they are made by Samsung in South Korea, Vietnam and China.
“The project will provide UP with a global identity as an export center and will help the state to obtain more foreign direct investment. The Samsung unit is likely to generate direct employment of 510 people and indirectly employ hundreds more, ”the official said.
