Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath recommended an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the gang rape of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras.
Amid mounting pressure on the state government due to nationwide protests against its handling of the case, the CM’s office tweeted the development on Saturday.
CM Adityanath had ordered the suspension of Hathras Police Superintendent Vikrant Vir and three other police officers on Friday night for “negligence and late investigation” in the case. He also ordered that “narcoanalysis polygraph tests” be carried out on everyone involved in the case.
The Dalit teenager died at Safdarjang Hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday, 15 days after ‘upper’ caste men brutally raped and tortured her while out foraging on September 14.
Opposition parties, including Congress, the Trinamool Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and the CPI, participated in protests in various places and implored Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi to take action in the case.
According to Priyanka Gandhi, the state government was trying to lay the blame and the government must reveal the phone records of the district magistrate and SP (which were suspended) to determine who had been giving them instructions. On Friday, she tweeted, “. @ Myogiadityanath RESIGN. She has no moral right to continue as Chief Minister of the UP. “
Why is the Prime Minister silent and where is the Union Minister of the Interior? What are they afraid of? Why is it the largest state in India under Section 144? “CPI leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted on Friday.
After meeting with relatives of the victim in Hathras on Saturday night, Congressional leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi said the UP government should ensure the safety of the aggrieved family. “I’m with family. It is the responsibility of the state government to ensure their safety, ”said Rahul Gandhi.
“The family could not see their daughter for the last time. UP CM Yogi Adityanath must understand her responsibility. Until justice is served, we will continue this fight, ”said Priyanka Gandhi.
