Srinagar:

Four terrorists were killed Friday in a meeting with security forces in Jammu’s Kiloora village and in the Shopian district of Kashmir. This is one of the rarest shootings in the Union Territory in which a terrorist surrendered, police said.

Police said two of the dead terrorists were involved in the kidnapping and murder of a member of the BJP-affiliated panchayat.

The encounter took place hours after the body of Nisar Ahmad Bhat, a member of the panchayat, was found in an apple orchard. Mr. Bhat was kidnapped by terrorists 10 days ago.

“We have killed the terrorists involved in the murder of a member of the panchayat. The encounter took place shortly after his body was found today,” said Vijay Kumar, IGP Kashmir.

Police said the meeting began after receiving specific information about the presence of five terrorists in the town of Shopian. The operation was launched jointly by the army, the police and the paramilitary CRPF.

In the shooting that followed, four terrorists were killed, a senior police officer said.

“A terrorist surrendered. We detained him and he will be treated according to the law,” said an official.
