Rasmus Paludan, who was arrested near Malmo before the rally, burned a bacon-wrapped Koran last year.
Stockholm: Protesters threw stones at police and burned tires in southern Sweden late on Friday, authorities said, hours after a Danish anti-Muslim politician was prevented from attending a nearby demonstration to burn the Koran.
Some 300 people were on the streets of Malmo and the violence intensified as the night wore on, according to police and local media.
The rally was related to an incident earlier in the day in which protesters burned a copy of the Islamic holy book, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told the Swedish tabloid. Express.
Rasmus Paludan, who leads the far-right Danish anti-immigration party Hard Line, was scheduled to travel to Malmo to speak at that event, which was taking place on the same day as the weekly Muslim Saturday prayers.
But authorities were ahead of Paludan’s arrival by announcing that he had been banned from entering Sweden for two years. He was later arrested near Malmo.
“We suspected that he was going to break the law in Sweden,” said Calle Persson, a police spokesman in Malmo. AFP.
“There was also the risk that their behavior would pose a threat to society.”
But his supporters went ahead with the rally, and then three people were arrested for inciting racial hatred.
Paludan then posted a scathing message on Facebook. “Returned and expelled from Sweden for two years. However, rapists and murderers are always welcome.” he wrote.
Last year, Paludan attracted media attention for burning a Koran wrapped in bacon, a meat that is anathema to Muslims.
