After being closed for eight months, Karnataka’s universities reopened on Tuesday amid various precautionary measures during the pandemic.
However, students from many universities were unable to attend classes, as many of them who had given swabs for COVID 19 tests did not get the results. To attend classes, students and staff must present a negative COVID certificate.
TM Manjunath, president of the Karnataka Government University Teachers Association, said classes were held only for seniors. He said most colleges reported low attendance. Manjunath said that only about 10 to 20 percent of the students chose to attend these classes.
The state government has made it clear that students are not required to attend classes and that students wishing to attend classes must obtain a consent form from their parents. Those students who do not want to attend classes offline have been told to attend classes online.
Amaresh Kadagada, State President of the Indian Student Federation, Karnataka, said that students from many universities had to go to hospitals or primary care centers to get tested for COVID 19. “The government needs to conduct free tests in university facilities for staff and students so they are safe, ”he said.
