Union Minister Smriti Irani tests positive for Covid-19

The Minister of the Union of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani, reported today that she has tested positive for coronavirus infection.

By posting the news on her official Twitter account, she urged those who contacted her on fasting days to get tested “as soon as possible.”

The cabinet minister in the government led by Narendra Modi was last seen campaigning for the Bhartiya Janata Party in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections on Saturday.

During her election rally, the Union minister stated that “the wealth acquired through the forage scam” will not find winners among the self-respecting people of the state. The BJP leader, who addressed her first rallies in the state, also invoked the images of Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, and commented that people knew that “she comes with the lotus and not with the lantern”, a obvious allusion to the poll symbols of BJP and RJD respectively.

Other prominent leaders who have campaigned in the state so far include Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Congressional leaders Raj Babbar and Shatrughan Sinha, BSP Supreme Mayawati, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. The rising star of the PCI, Kanhaiya Kumar, also joined the campaign, mainly for candidates from left-wing parties. In addition, the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman flew in to publish the BJP manifesto that promised, among other things, free corona vaccination.
