Union Minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted tonight that he tested positive for coronavirus, which has so far infected more than 50 lakh people in the country. Before him, at least seven union ministers, including the Union Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, and two dozen lawmakers contracted the disease.

“Yesterday I felt weak and I consulted my doctor. During the course of my check-up, I tested positive for COVID 19. I am currently doing well with everyone’s blessings and good wishes. I have isolated myself,” said Mr. Se read Gadkari’s tweet.

In a second tweet, the minister suggested that everyone in contact with him follow security protocol.

“I request all those who have approached my contact to be careful and follow the protocol. Stay safe,” said the tweet of the 63-year-old man, who manages the portfolios of Road and Highway Transport, Micro, Small and Medium Business.

Earlier today, India reported 90,123 new coronavirus cases, taking its total past the 50 lakh mark. The country also reported 1,290 deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest in one day, data from the Union Ministry of Health showed.

The number of people who have died from the disease now stands at 82,066, with a mortality rate of 1.63%. The positivity rate in the country stands at 8.06%.

India has been reporting the highest number of daily coronavirus cases in the world since August.

For the past week, except Tuesday, it has been reporting more than 90,000 cases.
