Chandigarh:
A 58-year-old uncle of cricketer Suresh Raina was killed while four members of his family were reportedly injured in a robbery attack in Punjab’s Pathankot district.
The man has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a government contractor. According to the police, the incident took place in the village of Thariyal in Pathankot in Punjab on the night of August 19-20.
Kumar’s older brother, Shyam Lal, confirmed that the victim was the cricketer’s uncle. He said that Raina is expected to visit the village.
Earlier, a senior law enforcement official had said they could not confirm the victim’s relationship to the cricketer.
According to the police, three to four members of the notorious “Kale Kachhewala” gang had come with the intention of looting and attacked Ashok Kumar and his relatives at their home in Thariyal village near Madhopur de Pathankot.
At the time of the attack, they were sleeping on the terrace of their house.
Ashok Kumar suffered head injuries and died that same night, police said. In confirming Mr. Kumar’s death, Pathankot Police Chief Superintendent Gulneet Singh Khurana had previously said that he had no confirmation of the victim’s relationship with the cricketer.
“We are investigating the matter,” the SSP said.
According to the police, the robbers fled the house with some cash and gold.
Kumar’s mother, Satya Devi, 80, his wife Asha Devi, their children Apin and Kuashal were injured, police said.
While Satya Devi has been released from the hospital, others are still in treatment, said Pathankot Police Superintendent Prabhjot Singh Virk.
