UK returnee who fled to Andhra from Delhi tests positive for new strain of virus


An Anglo-Indian woman, who tested positive for Covid-19 after her return from the UK and managed to sneak out of a hospital in Delhi to reach Andhra Pradesh, was found infected with the new strain of coronavirus. However, the spread of the variant of it in Andhra Pradesh has not been reported.

They tracked her to Rajamahendravaram and admitted her to a hospital together with her son last week.

“A woman who escaped from the isolation center in Delhi and arrived in Andhra Pradesh on a special train turned out to be infected with a new strain of the UK virus. There is no spread of the UK strain in AP from her,” said the Tuesday State Health Commissioner Katamaneni Bhaskar.

“Of the 12 passengers who returned to the UK and tested positive for Covid-19, only the woman had the new strain,” the health commissioner added.

Bhaskar said that the state of health of the Anglo-Indian woman, who is currently in an isolation ward at the hospital, was perfect and that she did not have any other ailments.

According to officials, he was tested for Covid-19 at the New Delhi International Airport Health Center. The airport authorities handed her over to Safdarjung Hospital the next day for treatment.

As she was asymptomatic, she was asked to remain in isolation for seven days. Once he received his outpatient card, he left the isolation center without informing the authorities. Shortly afterwards, East Godavari district officials received a communication from Delhi that the woman could travel to her hometown Rajahmundry on the Andhra Pradesh Express train.

The Andhra Pradesh health authorities, with the cooperation of the railway police and local police, managed to locate the woman when the train arrived and took her to the government hospital in Rajahmundry.

“Except for her son, no other person contacted the woman. Even her son tested negative,” the health commissioner said.

The woman returned to India on December 21 and landed in Delhi.

UK strain in India

Six passengers returning from the UK were reported to have tested positive for the new strain of the novel coronavirus as of Tuesday morning.

“All of these people have been kept in single room isolation in health facilities designated by the respective state governments. Their close contacts have also been quarantined. A full contact tracing has been initiated for fellow travelers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing in other specimens are happening, “said the Ministry of Health.

The six passengers were among 114 passengers who returned from the UK between November 25 and December 23, who tested positive for Covid-19. His samples were sent to 10 laboratories across the country for genetic sequencing.

About 33,000 passengers disembarked at various Indian airports from the UK between November 25 and December 23.

The government has already banned flights to and from the UK from December 23 to Thursday due to the new strain of coronavirus.
